Snow Blower Prep: Local Deadlines by City

Service your snow blower about three weeks before the first plowable snow — a date that varies by city in the table below. Fresh, stabilized fuel, clean oil, a good spark plug, and spare shear pins keep the machine running and keep you out of the repair-shop line after the first storm. Our snow dates come from NOAA normals; the prep steps paraphrase consumer testers and makers like Toro and Ariens.

Fuel is the number-one no-start cause

Untreated gasoline can start to break down in about 30 days, gumming the carburetor over the off-season. Drain summer-old fuel, refill with fresh gas, and add stabilizer, or run the tank dry at season's end. Ethanol-blend fuel is especially hard on small engines.

A fouled spark plug and old, cold-thickened oil are the next two suspects. A fresh plug and an oil change are cheap insurance against a machine that will not start when you need it most.

Shear pins, tires, and a test start

Shear pins break on purpose to protect the auger gearbox when you hit buried ice or a newspaper. Keep two to four correct spares. Set tire pressure to the printed spec so the machine tracks straight, and do a full test start well before the first storm so any repair happens on your schedule, not the storm's.

How we set the prep deadline

We estimate the first plowable snow from monthly snowfall normals and set the prep deadline three weeks earlier, so the machine is ready before the first storm and before shop backlogs build. Because first-snow timing is an estimate, we label it as such on every page.

Frequently asked questions

When should I service the machine?
About three weeks before the first plowable snow, which the table above estimates for your city. Early service beats the post-storm repair rush.
How old can the gas be?
Untreated gasoline can degrade in about 30 days. Use fresh fuel with stabilizer, or run the tank dry at season's end.
Why won't it start after summer?
Usually stale fuel that varnished the carburetor. A fouled plug or old oil can also be to blame. Fresh, stabilized fuel and a new plug fix most cases.
What are shear pins?
Small bolts that connect the auger to its shaft and break on purpose to protect the gearbox. Keep two to four correct spares.
Electric or gas?
Electric and battery machines suit lighter snow and smaller drives; gas handles deep, heavy, wet snow and long driveways better. Match it to your typical snowfall.
How much snow before I use it?
Single-stage blowers work best on about two inches or more; two-stage machines handle deeper snow. Below that, a shovel is faster.
What tire pressure should I run?
Set the pressure printed on the sidewall, commonly in the 15–20 psi range, so the machine tracks straight.
Should I do a test start?
Yes, well before the first storm, so any needed repair happens on your schedule rather than during a snowfall.
